Timely Surgery and Post operative Care determine the success of cardiac surgery



Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the most common congenital heart disorder in adults after bicuspid aortic valve. However, it is quite asymptomatic until they reach adulthood. Undetected ASD may lead toarrhythmias, stroke, pulmonary hypertension and its squeal. Although surgery remains the major option, it should be performed without delay by following established standards to avoid risk.

Retrospective study was carried out on 489 patients with age 18 to 65 years old who had undergone surgical repair of isolated secundum type ASD. The study was in 3 tertiary centers in developing countries, between 2010 to 2014 and was approved by ethical committee of the tertiary centers.
